WIAW – I’ll Bring the Falafels & Pizza

Happy Wednesday everyone!  I hope you’ve had a great day so far! :)

We’ve just got back from a great day out in Bristol City.  The sun was shining, it was warm, and we had lots of exercise walking up and down the hilly city.  We even decided to ditch the car for the day, and instead walked the 2.5 miles into Bath city centre and hopped on a train.  It was all good fun :)

As is customary on a Wednesday, I’m going to head over to Jenn’s WIAW party, check out all the delicious eats and get inspired!  But before I head off there, let me share what we ate today:

Breakfast
Delicious North Staffordshire oatcakes with a sprinkling of ground linseed and a big dollop of cherry & berry preserve.  These oatcakes take more prep than regular pancakes, but they’re so worth it.

Lunch
On the way to Bristol, I sent a tweet asking for recommendations of a great place to eat a vegan lunch in the city.  The first tweet back recommended Falafel King on Cotham Hill… so that’s where we went :)

By the time we’d walked across the city, stopping along the way to admire the graffiti art…

walked up the Christmas Steps

This old passageway was 'steppered' in 1669. I love that expression!

walked up St Michael’s Hill and down Cotham Hill, we were definitely ready for some lunch!  Lil’ L and I chose to have the humous platter, which came with four falafels, chickpeas and a soft, warm, wholemeal pitta.

M chose to have falafel in a laffa.  This included six falafel and your choice of salad fillings and dressings.  M pretty much included everything in his laffa.  It looked so delicious.  My photo really doesn’t do it justice.

I can’t wait to have a try at re-creating one of these at home.

Falafel King is a great cafe/restaurant.  It has a beautiful seating area downstairs.  I didn’t take a photo as I didn’t want to put people off their falafel ;) but here’s a bit of footage from the Guide2Bristol site.

We had a great time at the restaurant and we’ll definitely be back :)

Drinks
Hot water and lemon
1 small black coffee
1 soy cappuccino
water (not enough!)
1 Clipper Organic Sleep Easy tea.  Last week, Tesco substituted my usual Nettle tea with this one.  I’m glad they did as I’ve now discovered another herbal tea that I love.  This one contains cinnamon, chamomile, rooibos, lemon balm, valerian and natural orange flavouring.  I love its beautiful, delicate flavour so I’ll definitely buy it again :)

Snacks
raw cashews & dried raisin mix (shared on the train)
piece of home made zucchini brownie. This was too dry, so I need to do some work on the recipe.

Dinner
Home made pizza left over from Monday night.  Lil’ L and I had great fun making this pizza.  We made the base with half wholemeal and half white flour, then covered it with a generous layer of home made pesto (which included a cup of spinach and lots of ground cashews).  We then packed on as many veggies as we could!  We used courgette, red pepper, yellow pepper, red onion and mushroom, all cut finely and a sprinkling of pine nuts.

I think we’ll have to name this one the ’confetti pizza’!

The pesto and veggies were so delicious that we didn’t feel the need to add any cheese on.  We certainly didn’t miss it!

Dessert
Banana, blueberry & chocolate ‘thickie’

Well, that’s me done for another WIAW.  Time to head over to the lovely Jenn’s and get inspired.  Hope to see you there! xx

p.s. Don’t forget to enter my giveaway to win some home made raw chocolates.  The closing date is Friday 17th Feb, 9pm GMT.

YUM! I want M’s wrap and the hummus that you and Lil’ L shared…such good eats.

Confetti pizza? I like the name quite a bit, maybe you could include it in your book.

It is wonderful to see the photos of Bristol.

Bristol isn’t far from Bath (distance wise) but they are so different in character. It’s a cool place for a day out and now I’ve found Falafel King, I can’t wait to go back and try one of those wraps!
Yep, I’ll include the pizza in the book. I’m still plugging away at it! Thank you so much for all your support xx

hey! fab blog….I just bookmarked your pizza because I’m gonna make it asap! It looks so professional…if a pizza can be professional! :-)

Thanks Emma! :) Pizza gets a bad rep for being junk food, but there are so many ways to make delicious, nutritious pizzas. We’re loving the ‘confetti’ pesto pizza at the moment, but I can’t wait to try out some new combinations. Next on my list is portobello mushrooms and truffle oil!

Wow, that pizza looks incredible! I can see why you wouldn’t miss the cheese! Glad you had such a fun day–again I am in love with the old architecture and beauty of the cities near you. I must visit in person someday!

    • http://www.bitofthegoodstuff.com Sharon

Yes, you must come and visit one day! The cities and countryside round here are so beautiful! I’ve been here for 12 years now but still don’t take it for granted.

Your pizza looks so amazing and I LOVE that it’s vegan with no fake cheeses. Love it! So glad to have found you through WIAW.

    • http://www.bitofthegoodstuff.com Sharon

Thanks Kimberly! :) I find that if you add a delicious pesto to a pizza, then you just don’t need to put cheese on top. We don’t tend to use soy cheeses as they’re pretty horrible (the ones we’ve tried so far anyway)!

Wow! That has GOT to be the most gorgeous pizza I’ve ever seen! Love that you used a pesto base…and cheese? Who could think about cheese when looking at all those beautiful colors?! Yum!

    • http://www.bitofthegoodstuff.com Sharon

Thanks Heather! :) We’re loving pesto pizzas! They’re so much nicer (and tastier) than pizzas slathered in lots cheese! You must try one if you haven’t already x

That meal out looks amazing! I love falafel and should really make it more often at home. That pizza looks pretty fab too, the crust looks so professional!

I would buy my bread maker on its pizza dough making merits alone. You throw in the ingredients, press a button and 45 minutes later your dough is ready. So easy and hassle free!
I haven’t made falafel in ages either, so I must put it on the list for next week’s eats. It’s one of Lil’ L’s favourite foods along with humous! :)

what a lovely day out! the meals look amazing! the pizza is so colorful, confetti pizza surely is the right name for it. it just makes me smile! perfect for carneval time (which we are in at the moment in austria). Everybody eats colourful stuff, orange jam filled pastry and fish salads.

    • http://www.bitofthegoodstuff.com Sharon

If the name makes you smile, then I’m definitely going to keep it :)
You’re living in such a beautiful part of the world at the moment. I visited once in the winter time and it was a truly magical experience. We’re talking about going back in the next year or two for a summer vacation of hiking and mountain biking :)
The Austrian Carnival sounds cool! As you’ve probably seen from my blog, I LOVE colourful food! :)
